‘Twas The Day You Were Born

‘Twas The Day You Were Born

Twas the day you were born, And all through the place Excitement was growing! We’d soon see your face! Contractions were coming  Slowly but surely We couldn’t help but guess Would your hair be straight or would it be curly? The midwife was called, the doula was too Labor was unfolding; We couldn’t wait for you! And mom on her birth ball and me by her side Through this labor dance we both would easily glide. When all of a sudden there was such a splatter! I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter! My water just broke!  She said with a smile. Hey, at least it broke on the bathroom tile! The moon in the sky was full as can be As she rocked back and forth on her hands and her knees. When what to my wondering ears should I hear? But breathing and moaning in rhythm so clear. With stronger contractions five minutes apart, I knew active labor was soon to start! Quickly and swiftly our doula did arrive, With her support we knew we surely would thrive. We slow danced!  We counter pressured, we did hip circles on the ball,  Your mother said, it’s time!  To the hospital y’all! We packed up the car, the seatbelts we clicked, And away to the birth place we had earlier picked! So to the hospital we all did calmly go, With our doula following behind, you’d be here soon we did know. Deeply she breathed with each longer contraction, Staying in her rhythm she found satisfaction. As we parked the car and unloaded our stuff,...

A Successful Birth

A Successful Birth

I was recently at a party when a lady came up to me and introduced herself. We started talking, and the inevitable subject of “what do you” came up. I love to talk about my job, so I was happy to say, I’m a doula! I was prepared for the usual “you do-what?”, and my elevator speech to follow, but surprisingly, she said she knew what a birth doula was. I was still smiling, ready to talk more about my business when her next question threw me off. “How many of your clients are successful?” My smile faltered a bit, and I replied “Successful? What do you mean?”   Her: You know, how many succeed at their birth?” Me: (Thoroughly puzzled now) Define what you mean by success at their birth. Her: You know, all natural Me: What’s your definition of all natural? Her: No pain medications, no interventions. Just, nice and natural. Successful. Me: (Trying not to give her the side eye at this point) I think we may have a very different view of what’s successful. I went on to explain that all of my clients are successful. None of them “birth better” than others. For some, a successful birth may be in the water, surrounded by candles, classical music, with an essential oil diffuser lightly scenting the air in the background. For others, it may be arriving at the hospital in active labor, ready for an epidural. For someone else, it may be having skin to skin time in the operating room after their planned cesarean birth. As I doula, I support all of these births....
Nine Things To Do When You’re Nine Months Pregnant

Nine Things To Do When You’re Nine Months Pregnant

The ninth month of pregnancy can feel like it lasts a year, and in the middle of summer, can feel even longer! Looking for ways to pass the time?  We’ve compiled a list of nine things you could do in summer here in Winston-Salem.   1. Visit Old Salem– Old Salem Museum and Gardens is a restored Moravian community, and while an admission ticket is needed to venture inside many of the houses and museums, you can wander around the beautiful old brick roads anytime. Visit the bakery, enjoy a picnic on the grassy knoll outside Salem College, and maybe even stop to take a pregnancy picture with the giant coffee pot at the north end of this historic district! 900 Old Salem Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27101   2. Get a haircut– We recently had a postpartum client tell us how much she wished she gotten a haircut before she had her baby! Time is often at a premium after baby comes. Sit in the air conditioning and let your stylist give you the perfect pregnancy do! 3.  See a baseball game–Take you and your belly baby out to the ballgame!  Cheer on our local minor league baseball team, the Winston-Salem Dash!  We are fortunate to have a lovely ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.  Satisfy your pregnancy cravings with a ballpark dinner, and sit back and enjoy the game.  Check the calendar to see which dates have after game fireworks for an extra special treat!  A source at the Dash says seats near the third base line tend to be shadiest.  951 Ballpark Way, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 4. Indulge at...
