My Mother’s Birth Story

My Mother’s Birth Story

A few years ago, when I first became a birth doula, I asked my mother about her birth story. The birth story that was me. I’d never really thought about it before. But when you delve into the world of birth work, you become curious about things you’d never really think about on a normal basis, like placentas, vernix, and lochia. Oh, I’d heard a little bit. I was born on Good Friday. It was hot as blazes, according to my mother, too hot for mid-April, even in North Carolina. My dad paced the waiting room, as fathers were not allowed back into the delivery rooms of the tiny twee country hospital I was born in. I’d smiled when she told me about the parade of family and friends who marched into the hospital, bearing flowers, who stared through the glass of the hospital nursery window. How I was one of only three babies in the nursery that weekend. How I was easily identifiable because of the messy shock of thick dark hair atop my head. But that was really the extent of what I knew. So I asked her. What was labor like for her. Come to find out, I was a real pain. She told me, (all cheerfully, of course) that she’d labored with me for about 15 hours, 13 of which were flat on her back, in the hospital, alone. A nurse occasionally coming in the room. She had terrible back labor, and eventually it was discovered that I was occiput posterior, also known as sunny side up , a position that can often cause intense...

Finding a Proper Placenta Encapsulation Specialist By Jereka Hunt, CPES (PBi) So, you’re having a baby. Whether it’s your first child or your fourth, you are likely doing your research and reading up on the newest findings. You started out with Mamaroo and slowly made your way to giving birth in a pool of warm water and hiring a doula (all of which you are strongly considering). You’ve finally stumbled onto Placenta Encapsulation and you know it time for you to get some sleep but you simply can’t stop reading (I mean, is this for real?!). You read on and you see that placentophagy has been in the news lately, especially as it pertains to new celebrity moms using their placentas for postpartum recovery. You see it is an all-natural alternative for healing during your postpartum phase. You’ve discovered the 4 out of 5 women will suffer from postpartum mood instability and at least 1 of them to go on to develop postpartum depression. ‘Twas The Day You Were Born

‘Twas The Day You Were Born

Twas the day you were born, And all through the place Excitement was growing! We’d soon see your face! Contractions were coming  Slowly but surely We couldn’t help but guess Would your hair be straight or would it be curly? The midwife was called, the doula was too Labor was unfolding; We couldn’t wait for you! And mom on her birth ball and me by her side Through this labor dance we both would easily glide. When all of a sudden there was such a splatter! I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter! My water just broke!  She said with a smile. Hey, at least it broke on the bathroom tile! The moon in the sky was full as can be As she rocked back and forth on her hands and her knees. When what to my wondering ears should I hear? But breathing and moaning in rhythm so clear. With stronger contractions five minutes apart, I knew active labor was soon to start! Quickly and swiftly our doula did arrive, With her support we knew we surely would thrive. We slow danced!  We counter pressured, we did hip circles on the ball,  Your mother said, it’s time!  To the hospital y’all! We packed up the car, the seatbelts we clicked, And away to the birth place we had earlier picked! So to the hospital we all did calmly go, With our doula following behind, you’d be here soon we did know. Deeply she breathed with each longer contraction, Staying in her rhythm she found satisfaction. As we parked the car and unloaded our stuff,...

A Day In Your Life With A Postpartum Doula

A Day In Your Life With A Postpartum Doula

It’s your partner’s first day back at work.  Your babe is a mere few days old, tiny, adorable, sweet in every way.  And exhausting in every way!  Never fear, your postpartum doula is here! 9:00  We text you or knock very softly to let you know we’ve arrived.  (we know better than to ring that doorbell if Baby might be sleeping!)  You open the door, we hug, and begin our day! 9:30  You are relaxing, eating the breakfast we’ve just prepared for you, sipping coffee or your favorite tea.  While you eat, we hold your baby, and give you some much deserved me time. 10:00  You slip away for a long bath or shower, work on all those thank you cards that need to go out, and catch up on emails and phone calls.  We change your baby’s diaper, and help get her down for a nap.  While she naps, we wash all your breast pump pieces, load the dishwasher, neaten the kitchen and prepare snacks for you to eat through out the day.  (cup up fruit and veggies in containers in the fridge are a great way to grab a healthy snack!)  We keep an eye on your baby to make sure she is sleeping comfortably. 11:30  You settle in to your favorite spot on the couch or in the rocking chair, we hand you your Boppy pillow and help you get adjusted, and bring Baby to you to nurse or bottle feed.  We can help you with some breastfeeding challenges, and can quickly refer you to certified lactation consultants if you need them!  We turn the TV...
